The Program: Davis Dyslexia Correction®


Davis Dyslexia Correction begins with an assessment to determine whether the program is appropriate for the client, and if it is, how it should be structured. The specific characteristics of dyslexic learning disabilities are nearly as varied as the individuals who experience them. For this reason correction is not a one-size-fits-all process; each program must be designed to meet the needs of the individual client. Assessment helps determine that design. When the client is a child, parents participate in part of the assessment process.

The Assessment consultation takes approximately one-and-a-half to two hours. Our assessments don’t “feel” like tests – they are relaxing and most clients find them fun!

The Basic Program

Many dyslexics have unique perceptual abilities: many think in primarily in pictures and are very good at manipulating these mental images in three dimensions. This is a valuable gift, and those who possess it can develop wonderful skills that we “word thinkers” would find extremely challenging.

Many are very gifted in the areas of: spacial awareness, people-oriented professions, mathematics or engineering, and creative endeavors, such as inventing and all areas of the arts. What a loss to the world it would be if we “cured” people of these gifts! Our goal is not to eliminate the foundations of these gifts, but “correct” the learning disability, by teaching you a new set of behaviors.

One part of correction involves learning to take conscious control of those wonderful perceptual abilities. Because it’s when we apply them to the two dimensional world of text that we experience distortions, disorientation. We unconsciously evolve the learning disability as we engage in unproductive strategies in a desperate effort to lessen the distortions. Through the correction process, we learn new, productive strategies, we call the Davis "tools" that do eliminate distortions and disorientation!

We all think partly in images and partly in words. Many dyslexics conceptualize almost exclusively with mental pictures. As we read, we create pictures in our imagination. No problem getting a picture for “dog,” but how do you visualize the meaning of a word like “if”? For many such abstract words we simply have no pictures. If you think predominantly in pictures, this creates confusion and interferes with comprehension.

Those with the dyslexic gift often learn most quickly and deeply when instruction is hands-on and real-world. So another part of dyslexia correction involves “Symbol Mastery
®”, a process that creates a permanent visual and deep understanding of any word or concept it’s applied to. Through Symbol Mastery, dyslexics learn to create mental pictures for even the most abstract words, eliminating confusion and enhancing comprehension.

So, correction gives us tools to take conscious control of our thought processes and learning, so that we can move smoothly from the three dimensional to the two dimensional, and develop ALL our skills to their fullest potential!

The Basic Program involves five consecutive days, Monday through Friday, of one-on-one facilitation. The schedule is:

  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Correction is very personalized, intensive work! The center closes during lunch to give both the client and the facilitator the opportunity to get physically and mentally away from the process for a time. This significant break allows clients to “digest” their learning, to unconsciously process what has gone on during the morning session. So, for children, parents must be available to supervise during lunch.

You are empowered!

During the 30-hour program, clients learn under controlled circumstances all the strategies they need to overcome their dyslexic learning disability. These strategies are tools for controlling their perceptions and eliminating confusion. While other processes require ongoing “treatment” for as long as a year, our program gives clients all the tools and expertise they need in just one intensive week! You complete your correction on your own schedule by completing Symbol Mastery at your own pace. As clients work on Symbol Mastery on their own, they need a support person. This support person can be a parent, sibling, friend, anyone who can be supportive. On the last day of the program, we train the support person in their role, and in the use of the Davis tools.

After the 30-hour facilitation clients can return at no additional charge for a short refresher if needed, and they are also entitled to unlimited telephone consultations with their facilitator. There is never a charge for a telephone consultation.

How much improvement?

Contrary to what they often heard from teachers, it’s not that dyslexics never paid attention in school or simply refused to concentrate. Every bit as eager to learn as anyone else, they often paid very close attention in class and strove harder than most. But they were unable to gain the benefit of instruction that didn’t take their perceptual gifts or learning style into account. During the week-long program, many clients experience dramatic improvement in reading, because through correction they discover how to access and make use of their prior learning. ALL clients will see improvement in the course of the week, but the amount varies with the individual. It is common to see an improvement of one or more grade levels in reading by the end of the 30-hour program. However, client follow-through will make a lasting difference, leading to continued progress even after the program.

Davis Dyslexia Correction has an overall success rate of 97%
among those clients who complete their correction program.

An important difference

The Davis program does not rely on any of the following:

Instructional interventions, like:

phonics training

  worksheets, repetition, or drill
Chemical interventions, like: herbal remedies
  over-the-counter or prescription medications*
Mechanical interventions, like: color overlays
  large print

*If you are taking any medication when you undergo assessment for a Davis Dyslexia Correction program, make certain you inform the facilitator! Certain kinds of medication can alter your perceptions and affect the efficacy of your program.


Included in the program, the client will receive a Davis Dyslexia Association® back pack with the following materials necessary for the program and completion of the post-program work.
